Shaving in the Dark is an independent collective of illustrators and editors who put together a compilation of their comics in a zine. They do monthly Drink & Draw events to gather the content, as well as art workshops that build comics skills, and occasionally brand activations or lifestyle fairs, at which they do murals, body painting, portraits, mini drawing classes, comics swaps and more. Shanghai Sketch Group is a community of budding artists and creatives that host figure drawing sessions. Founded in 2014, the group meet most Sunday afternoons at a variety of locations both indoor and outdoor depending on the weather. It's a pretty casual affair - booze is welcome and you can draw or paint using whatever materials you wish. When the session begins, the model will take up a range of poses lasting anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes. Work is then informally discussed post-session and then shared via a WeChat group. Own equipment needed.
First founded in 2016, A Shanghai Poetry Zine is published every season and includes both poetry and visual artwork from promising artists and writers in Shanghai. Each edition has a theme, and the works are selected through an anonymous call for submissions. They organize poetry events at the launch of each edition, plus some extra collaborations over the year to explore the boundaries of poetry and other arts.
